EN: Hiking with Children in Engelberg and "Globi’s" Treasure Hunt

Last spring, week after week, my wife and I waited for the perfect weekend - when we would take our children on a real hike, with the lure of sleeping overnight up in the Alps. But time and again the weather forecasts warned about rain, either on the Saturday or Sunday.

In the end we decided that one day of hiking had to suffice and went to Brunni (Engelberg, Obwalden), at an hour’s distance from Zurich. We chose to start in a simple way from Ristis and therefore took a trail where children can follow a treasure hunt with the Swiss cartoon character Globi.

Our ten-year-old immediately took on the task, while the eight-year-old initially dragged his feet in protest against our alpine adventure, but then got going and, in the end, actually ran to be first to reach the next treasure chest.

The reward when you arrive at the destination at Brunnihütte is a “tickle trail”. Here you are encouraged to walk around a little pond barefoot to - through the soles of your feet - experience different surfaces; gravel, stones, bark, water or mud.

Globi’s treasure hunt is, in all honesty, quite simple, but that does not matter as long as it motivates children to keep on walking. What more could you ask for as an adult as long as you are able to enjoy the wonderful view of the Alps just a bit longer?
