EN: Alp Watching from Stanserhorn and its Unique Convertible Cable Car

My wife - who still has a far better knowledge of Switzerland than I - had heard that the mountain Stanserhorn was more than worth seeing. So this was where she brought the whole family this week, when our children are in the midst of their two-week autumn break.

During the trip from Zürich to the village of Stans you see mountains lining the horizon, but that did not prepare me for what was to come. I would claim that even the last stretch up to the summit manages to keep that secret, because the view is still only to the North.

There you have Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) - the lake where the three cantons of Uri, Schwyz and Unterwalden, in 1291, signed the charter which became the first founding stone of today’s Swiss Confederation.

The lake is very beautiful with its strange shapes and the town of Lucerne in one of the many bays, but for me this experience was in line with what I had expected. After all, Switzerland is a country which often touches the limits of "overly picturesque"…

Instead, the big surprise came when we reached the top of Stanserhorn and found ourselves in the middle of an impressive Alp scenery. Suddenly the expression Prealps (Voralpen) received a concrete content. Since we were at an altitude of 1 900 meters there was already snow in some places – obviously to our children's delight .

This would have been enough to make us happy with the day, but Stanserhorn has something unique to offer: CabriO - the world’s first "convertible cable car". The gondolas have two floors and on the upper one you are, quite literally, under the open sky.

On November 17, the CabriO cable car will close for the winter but we look forward to coming back when it reopens in April - to experience spring on Stanserhorn.
